Checking a charity's credentials

Find out how to check a charity's credentials to ensure your donations are given to legitimate causes.

Checking charity credentials

Not sure if a charity or fundraising website is legitimate? Here are some ways to check their credentials. Remember, if in doubt, take your time, do your research and seek further advice.

  • Check registration - Before giving, check for a charity registration number - you can verify by looking at the charity register www.gov.uk/checkcharity
  • Check the contact details - Be wary of anyone asking for donations with only a mobile phone number and a PO Box address. These are easy to close and difficult to trace. Ask for a landline number, and phone it to see who answers. You can also check the address of any registered charity here: https://www.gov.uk/find-charity-information
  • Check with the regulator - if donating through an online fundraising platform, check if they’re registered with the Fundraising Regulator. You can contact the Fundraising Regulator via its website: https://www.fundraisingregulator.org.uk/ or via Twitter: @FundrRegulator
