Our commitment to a more sustainable future

At AlRayan Bank, sustainability is woven into everything we do - from our purpose and culture to our day-to-day operations.

We’ve maintained carbon neutrality, fostered an inclusive workplace, supported vulnerable customers, and upheld strong governance standards. These efforts reflect our commitment to making a meaningful, lasting impact.

We are operationally carbon neutral

We’ve proudly been carbon neutral since 2022 — a reflection of our commitment to sustainability.

We report all relevant emissions in line with the Companies Act 2006, with calculations verified by Carbon Neutral Britain using the GHG Protocol and UK Government conversion factors.

Our footprint covers:

  • Scope 1 & 2: UK premises
  • Scope 3: Business travel — private car, air, and public transport

Pathway to paperless

Since 2019, we’ve cut paper usage by 75%. In 2024, we used 736,870 A4-equivalent sheets - a 50% reduction from the previous year. Key drivers for this impressive reduction include default paperless bank statements and quarterly savings account statements.

While occasional printed communications remain necessary, we continue to prioritise digital channels wherever possible.

This information, provided by the Bank’s main external print suppliers, includes customer communications, account statements, welcome letters, product literature etc. It is not an exhaustive list but illustrates the overall trend of paper usage.

Greener travel

We’re making low-carbon commuting easier and more accessible. Our Electric Car Scheme is gaining traction, with 12 EVs ordered - up from 9 in 2023 - saving over 10,000 kg of CO₂e. Nearly 70% of colleagues have explored quotes, and new charging points at our Birmingham office are helping drive uptake.

2024 Highlights:

  • 381,000 miles committed
  • 10,960 kg CO₂e saved
  • 3,726 kg Scope 3 reduction*

*Based on Distance-Based Impact methodology

Our Cycle to Work Scheme also supports greener travel and healthier lifestyles, offering up to 42% savings on bikes and equipment.

We continue to promote rail over road for business travel. In 2024, colleagues travelled over 105,000 miles by train - avoiding 38,334 kg of CO₂.
