Al Rayan Bank Board of Directors
Al Rayan Bank PLC is a subsidiary of Al Rayan UK Limited, a majority owned subsidiary of Masraf Al Rayan Q.P.S.C, one of Qatar’s largest and most well established banks.
The Bank’s Board of Directors has delegated responsibility for day-to-day management to the executive team, led by the Chief Executive Officer.

Michael Williams, Independent Non-Executive Chairman
Michael Williams became Chairman on 1 October 2021, bringing more than 35 years of experience of Islamic and conventional financial services with him.
Michael Williams also serves as Chairman of Walbrook Asset Finance, a position he has held since April 2020, and as Chairman of Marubeni Komatsu Equipment Finance, a position he has held since March 2016. Michael served as Deputy Chairman at Bank of London and Middle East during a nine-year spell from 2012 to 2021.
Malcolm Brookes, Senior Independent Director
Mr Malcolm Brookes was appointed to the Board in September 2014. He is Chair of Remuneration & Nomination Committee and a member of the Audit Committee and Board Risk Committee.
Malcolm has spent the vast majority of his career with HSBC Group. His 37 years with the Group began at Forward Trust Limited, latterly HSBC Asset Finance (UK) Ltd, in Birmingham, UK. Malcolm held a number of senior positions before the business was integrated into HSBC in 2001 at which point he was appointed CFO to the UK Commercial Bank. Before retiring from HSBC, he performed due diligence exercises in South Africa and Mexico and was instrumental in setting up the UK-based Business Growth Fund. Today Malcolm runs an accounting practice based in North Worcestershire.
Ahmed Swaleh Abdisheikh, Non-Executive Director
Mr. Ahmed Swaleh Abdisheikh joined the Board in January 2014. He is member of the Board Risk Committee, Audit Committee and Remuneration & Nomination Committee. Ahmed previously served as Executive Director (People & Technology) and interim CEO of Al Rayan Bank.
Ahmed is currently Interim Group CEO of Masraf Al Rayan. He is a South African qualified chartered accountant.
Kathryn Kerle, Independent Non-Executive Director
Kathryn is a Non-Executive Director of Al Rayan Bank and a member of the Audit Committee and Board Risk Committee. She is the Chair of the Risk, Audit and Evaluation Committee of the Microbiology Society. She is also Advisor, Board of Directors, Urgentem.
Kathryn has more than 35 years experience in the financial sector, most recently at RBS, where she led a team responsible for reviewing customer complaints in relation to a strategic remediation project. Previously, she was Head of Enterprise Risk Reporting for the bank. She joined RBS from Moody’s Investors Service, where she held a number of analytical and managerial roles in the UK, the US and Singapore. Earlier in her career, Kathryn founded and managed The Paradigm Alliance, a consulting firm based in Sydney, Australia. She began her career in finance at The Chase Manhattan Bank. Kathryn served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Fez, Morocco. Kathryn holds a BA from Bryn Mawr College and an MA from Georgetown University
Caroline Bradley, Independent Non-Executive Director
Caroline joined the Board in January 2021 and is Chair of the Audit Committee and a member of the Board Risk Committee. She is a Chartered Management Accountant and also Non-Executive Director at the Loughborough Building Society.
She has 20 years' Executive Director experience at TD Direct Investing (online stockbroker and bank) and Tenet Group (independent investment and mortgage advice support group) and brings in-depth Finance, Risk and Regulatory experience. She also brings experience in significant digital projects.
Steven Hicks, Independent Non-Executive Director
Mr Steven Hicks joined the Bank in August 2021 and was appointed to the Board in September 2021 as Non-Executive Director. He is Chair of the Board Risk Committee and a member of the Audit Committee and Remuneration & Nomination Committee.
He has more than 40 years’ experience in Financial Services and has extensive governance, risk management and compliance experience. He worked for 28 years at Barclays, including roles leading commercial banking in London and Premier banking nationally, was executive Director with responsibility for risk at Arbuthnot Latham & Co Limited and CEO at a home finance start-up, Gentoo Genie Limited where he is now the Chairman. He is also currently a Non-Executive Director and Chair of Board Risk Committee at State Bank of India UK Limited and Non-Executive Chairman at Orchard Funding Group PLC.
Giles Cunningham, CEO and Director
Mr Giles Cunningham was appointed to the Board in September 2021 and is Chief Executive Officer and Director.
Giles spent 17 years with Lloyds Banking Group, in various roles including International Transformation Director, Managing Director - International Retail Banking & Strategy, CEO Middle East, Strategy Director Lloyds TSB General Insurance and Finance Director Brazil. Giles left Lloyds Bank to join The Zubair Corporation in Oman as Group CEO, a 10,000-employee conglomerate operating multiple businesses across the Middle East and Asia. Since 2012 Giles has specialised in Islamic Banking, as CEO International at Qatar Islamic Bank in Doha and most recently Group CEO at London based Bank of London and The Middle East. Giles holds an MBA and is a Harvard Business School alumnus.
