Al Rayan Bank Board

Al Rayan Bank is run day-to-day by a senior management team overseen by an elected board of directors. The current members of the board are:

Mr Simon Moore, INDEPENDENT NON-EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN

Mr Simon Moore was appointed Non-Executive Director in January 2019 and became Chairman of the Board on 1 February 2019. Simon is a member of the Remuneration & Nomination Committee.

After leaving the British Army, Simon began his banking career in 1992. He completed his training with Lloyds Bank in 1994 and spent the bulk of his career with Chase Manhattan Bank in London and New York. He also worked with Barclays Bank where he was the regional director for the corporate banking business in Wales and the South West of England.

Simon was a member of the management board of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) from 2013 until 2016 and the director responsible for London and the South of England. Prior to that, he spent three years as CBI International Director leading the work of the CBI in support of its members outside the UK.

Simon is non-executive chairman of Cambridge & Counties Bank and non-executive chairman of Pennant International Group Plc. Formerly he was a governor at the University of the West of England and non-executive board member of the Government Office of the South West.

Mr Adel Mohammed Tayyeb Mustafawi, NON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Mr Adel Mohamed Tayeb Mustafawi is a Non-executive Director and was appointed to the Board in April 2011.  He is a member of the Board Risk Committee and Remuneration & Nomination Committee.  Mr Mustafawi is a Qatari national and has been Group CEO of MAR since inception.  In addition to this role, he is Vice Chairman of Qatar Sports Investment and Vice Chairman of Paris Saint Germain.  He has over twenty years of experience in Banking, Investment and Capital Markets.  He is a graduate of the University of Arizona, USA, majoring in Finance.

Mr Ahmed Swaleh Abdisheikh, Interim CEO & DIRECTOR

Mr Ahmed Swaleh Abdisheikh became the Interim CEO in June 2019. Previously, he was a Non-executive Director and was appointed to the Board in January 2014. He was a member of the Board Risk Committee, Audit Committee and was the Chairman of the Remuneration & Nomination Committee.

Ahmed is also the Chief Operating Officer of MAR, a position he has held since 2012. He is also a South African qualified chartered accountant and a Kenyan citizen.

Mr Malcolm Brookes, SENIOR INDEPENDENT DIRECTOR

Mr Malcolm Brookes was appointed to the Board in September 2014 and is the Senior Independent Director. He is chairman of the Audit Committee. Malcolm has spent the vast majority of his career with HSBC Group. His 37 years with the Group began at Forward Trust Limited, latterly HSBC Asset Finance (UK) Ltd, in Birmingham, UK. Malcolm held a number of senior positions before the business was integrated into HSBC in 2001 at which point he was appointed CFO to the UK Commercial Bank. Before retiring from HSBC, he performed due diligence exercise in South Africa and Mexico, and was instrumental in setting up the UK based Business Growth Fund.

Mr Richard Sommers, INDEPENDENT NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Mr Richard Sommers was appointed to the Board as Independent Non-Executive Director in June 2017. He is chairman of the Board Risk Committee and member of the Audit Committee.

Richard is highly experienced in retail and commercial banking and held senior positions with the Barclays Group, including Chief Financial Officer for Barclaycard and Risk Director of Retail Financial Services. He has also been Treasurer and Fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, a college in the University of Oxford, before retiring in 2016, and is now an Emeritus Fellow. Richard is a non-executive director of the West Bromwich Building Society, where he sits on the Risk Committee, the Audit Committee and the Nomination Committee.

Mr Patrick John Newberry, INDEPENDENT NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Mr. Patrick Newberry was appointed non-executive director of the Bank in January 2020. He is a member of the Board Risk Committee.

Patrick was a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and its predecessor firms for twenty-five years, working in its financial services practice. He worked with international banking and insurance groups in the UK and internationally as a strategy and performance improvement consultant as well as advising financial services organisations on regulatory matters.

He retired from PwC in 2013 and holds a number of non-executive roles, including non-executive director and chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee of The Brunel Pensions Partnership LLP and non-executive director and chairman of the Audit Committee of Shepherd & Wedderburn LLP. He is also a Commissioner of Historic England and Chairman of its Audit and Risk Committee.
