Fun Maths facts
April is maths and statistics month and as numbers are close to our heart, we thought we’d acknowledge it with some facts about maths:
1. Muslim scholars were fundamental to the development of modern mathematics. They contributed to and invented the modern arithmetical decimal system and its key operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
2. 2200 years ago, Eratosthenes estimated the Earth's circumference using maths alone (he never left Egypt). According to modern experts, he was incredibly accurate
3. Ancient Babylonians did maths in base 60 instead of base 10. That's why we have 60 seconds in a minute and 360 degrees in a circle.
4. And finally, the everyday word for ‘pie chart’ in French is ‘Camembert’
